How do I apply for Doctoral studies in Germany?
There are several structured Doctoral programs (primarily from Max-Planck, Fraunhofer etc) but still, most of the Doctoral positions are individual job advertisements. The department structure is slightly different in comparison to India. The department comprises of several full professors and each of them is the head of a particular institute. The institute comprises of Full Professor, post-docs, Ph.D. students, Bachelor-Master students. The institute might also have Junior professors who are equivalent to the assistant professor (in India). Please go to the department websites and find the institutes that are of interest to you. The institutes advertise for available positions on their websites or alternatively, you can also email the head of the Institute inquiring about possible openings. If there are any openings your profile is of interest, they will get back to you at the earliest.
Can I get funding for studying in Germany?
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is one of the largest scholarship organizations in the world offering numerous scholarships for international students. In addition, various programs offered by the international office of the universities provides an opportunity to interact with other international students.
Can I get internships during studies?
German universities encourage hands-on practical training to the students and there are several programs where the internship is mandatory and help their students find an internship. The pay during the internship is generally less than €1000 per month.
What do students do upon graduation?
This depends on personal interests. There are many masters students who are interested in pursuing Doctoral studies and continue with Doctoral work. Several others find job opportunities in several industries. There are also students who were offered full-time positions in the same company where they interned or completed their masters’ thesis.
